Slate Headstones Carved From Valentia Island Slate

Quarried in Co. Kerry since 1816, Valentia Island slate is one of Ireland’s most distinctive and historic materials. Instantly recognisable for its deep colour, fine grain and exceptional durability, each memorial exudes a uniquely Irish origin and character.

With its texture and tight grain, Valentia slate is the perfect canvas for crisp, elegant hand carving that directs attention to the detailed lettering and symbolic motifs. Distinctive but not too dominant, slate headstones give any message emphasis and deeper meaning.

Location and harmony are two other considerations you need not worry about, either. Through its striking, natural dark tone, Valentia slate embodies a timeless presence suitable for both modern and traditional cemeteries.

Why Choose Slate?

Valentia Island slate has been quarried for over 200 years and is still manufactured through low carbon, zero-waste techniques, making it a sustainable and environmentally conscious option.

To the eye, a slate gravestone possesses a beautiful deep grey to blue-black colouring that is wholly unique to Irish slate. Beyond its appearance, slate is weather-resistant to harsh Irish conditions, ensuring its smooth finish is maintained over time with minimal maintenance.

A slate headstone or slate grave marker allows for highly precise lettering and decorative carving that communicates any epitaph or message in a clear, clean manner. Combined with your custom choice of font, the headstone will stand in remembrance of your decades one for years to come.

Furthermore, slate can offer a more refined, contemporary look than limestone, while still maintaining a natural, hand-crafted feel. This makes it a top choice for headstones and grave markers; its all-round adaptability gives it a rare, timeless quality.

Custom Slate Memorials Made in Ireland

Through his decades of experience, James McLoughlin understands that no two memorials are alike, that what you have in mind for your loved one is special and meaningful. That’s why each headstone project begins with a personal discussion about the loved one being commemorated, which is often the most important step in the process.

Based on this chat and your needs, James will select a unique piece of Valentia slate with consideration for its tone, texture and thickness. From here, hand-carved elements such as Celtic crosses, local flora or Gaelic inscriptions can be added; whatever you choose.

Your hopes for the slate headstone are never too farfetched, either, as its smooth surface allows for exceptionally clean lettering and subtle artistic detail. Various colours and fonts are available, too, which James can advise on.
